October Afternoon, 14" x 21"Although she was a realistic studio painter for many years, Robin Purcell is now a plein air painter who ventures outside to see colors and shapes from life so that she can manipulate them in ways that express her personal artistic vision. The work of the early California Impressionists, particularly Granville Redmond and William Wendt, helped her to see the landscape as shapes and she found watercolor to be the most suitable medium for her technique when painting outdoors. These factors led her to develop a style that simplifies what she sees and organizes it into shimmering patches of color.

She has been juried into the prestigious Carmel and Sonoma (California) plein air festivals, won awards in national shows, and has had her work published in Splash 9 (2006) and Splash 10 (2008) -- collections of the best in watercolor published by North Light Books. She was featured in "Ones to Watch," Watercolor Artist Magazine (December 2007), and she has signature status in both the California Watercolor Association and the National Watercolor Association.
